I am having trouble getting a good even surface from my jointer. Particularly bad is snipe at the leading edge, but I get dips throughout. At woodworking is there a stardard video giving correct procedure? Can anyone give me some basics on using the jointer?

Snipe on a jointer is a sure sign that the knives and outfeed table are not in alignment.
I don't know if you have an online subscription or not, and I don't know what is visible to you, but assuming you have the appropriate access, if you go to the Tool Guide | Machinery | Jointers, and then click on the "See all content on Jointers" link, you will find a video and an article (from FWW #142), both by John White, on setting up your jointer.
When you're using the jointer, bear down on the front edge of the board as you're feeding it into the cutter. Once the wood has advanced enough that the first six inches or so are on the outfeed table, transfer this hold-down force to the outfeed table, and continue to hold the board down at the inboard end of the outfeed table (in the area just past the cutterhead) as you feed it through.
