I would usually consider using a low angle jack (ie Lie-Nielsen 62) as a shooting plane.
But has anyone use a 60 1/2 Stanley or Lie-Nielsen or a Lie-Nielsen 102 for the same activity?
I am in the market for a block plane and have to decide whether to purchase LN 60 1/2 or the 102. Obviously there are other considerations that influence this choice.
Thanks!!

Block planes are really designed primarily for end grain but as I have found since a block plane is likely in my pocket you can do alot more with them .
You could buy both- find a couple of good old Stanley's take the savings over one LN and buy yourself a 6 or a 7.
You are right on the savings by purchasing Stanley. I recently purchased, restored, and placed hock tools irons and chip breakers in a c. 1918 605 and 1926 No. 7....wonderful planes!
The LN 62 is a great shooting plane, especially with the hot dog attachment. I occasionally use their 60 1/2 for shooting on small parts, but it just doesn’t have the mass for larger work. While I love my 102, it is not suitable for shooting—the sides are curved and not necessarily square to the sole.
I agree with the comments above about using the 60 1/2 and use it mainly for end grain and smaller pieces for shooting. I do not own the LN 62.
Great....sounds like their 60 1/2 may be the way to go for now. Look at the 102 later.
Might depend on the component size no? The LN 62 (with Dictum hotdog) is such an incredible plane and a favorite. I have used it occasionally on small box parts on a normal shooting board. That said you should look at Matt Kenney's Insta where he shows use of the LN 60 1/2 (also a favorite) on a VERY "low-fi" shooting jig.
Thank you! I will check out Matt's Instagram.
Both LN block planes are great tools, but not really made for shooting. You could use the 60-1/2 for shooting small parts on a wee shooting board, but it won't do furniture sized parts.
If you are going to do a lot of shooting, take a look at the Veritas shoot board plane.
Thank you. I was using this conversation to help determine which to purchase....a 60 1/2 or a 102. Just didn't know whether either was any good at shooting...that will now be reserved for the LN 62. Most seem to think the 60 1/2 is the best to start with.
BTW...I would love to have some angel buy that Veritas for my birthday!
I just purchased the Veritas shooting plane. It’s been out of stock for months and they were kind enough to ship a new unboxed one from a store. It’s still unboxed on my workbench because I’m recovering from a bout of pneumonia (so sick the day it arrived).
I know it will be a hit. Could have used it last summer when I trimmed my deck posts, over 100 pieces of trim.
I own over a dozen Lee Valley Veritas planes and I love them all. They are my children.
