Finally 60+F outside – where I have to finish.
First impressions of using laquer pullover, now that I have some Mylands #4 Pullover solvent – and also homemade – per ‘Durwood’ in Australia. ( Follow up to ‘Composition’ topic: http://forums.finewoodworking.com/fine-woodworking-knots/finishing/lacquer-pullover-solvent-composition-us-source)
Took a scrap cherry board – hand planed only – no sanding. First sealed with thinned dewaxed shellac, (Zinsser) 2 wiped on coats. Dry only an hour or so before spraying on a couple coats of Deft Clear Wood Finish – pretty heavy with orange peel (intentional).
This sat for over week – as weather was too cold to try the pullover.
Today tried both the proprietary Myland’s #4 Pullover, and homemade pullover approx 60% ethanol (Kleen Strip) and 40% laquer thinner (happened to be Crown).
Both – when poured in jars – are water clear. Both clearly smell of ethanol – though the Mylands has a stronger ‘non-ethanol’ smell component.
Did one-half of the test board using each. Orange peel gone!
The Mylands seems stronger – drag comes faster, and the pad starts sticking faster.
But the homemade worked just as well. Perhaps a bit longer before it started to stick – and a bit less drag before that. But I actually liked that – it gave more control IMHO.
If anything, my next tests will be with even higher alcohol and less laquer thinner.
This time I will brush on – not spray – the Deft Clear Wood finish, several coats without worrying about brush marks. Will give it a day to dry – then hopefully warm enough again to pullover.
‘Pulled-over Lacquer’ is starting to look like a nice, easy, fast, and repairable finish for my cherry table…
