I have an old wine barrel that we keep outside on our patio. I have some left-over teak tongue and groove flooring boards that I want to use to create a circular cover for this wine barrel so that it is protected from rain. Anyway, I am ripping both the tongues and the grooves from these boards and these boards are pre-finished. I think what I want to do is either sand off the finish after gluing and cutting out the circle or use a stripper to remove the finish. I then want to finish the top with something that is water-resistant. My questions are: will a random orbital sander easily sand off the existing finish? Or should I use a stripper? One other question is, what is the best solution to finish this with since it will be out in the rain and needs to be water resistant. Any help would be appreciated… |

Saw the finish off, then sand or plane. Use a rip blade, auxillary fence and featherboards to keep the flooring against the fence. The blade will be buried halfway into the fence, you'll take off just enough to remove the finish. Make a push block that holds down and in at the same time. Rabbet out a scrap 2x for pushing down, add a dowel at the end to push forward. Make a handle that keeps your hands away from the blade.

you don't need to finish teak with anything for exterior use, it will weather nicely. If you want to finish it you can use any number of products labeled as "teak oils". If the boards are prefinished, why not just leave the finish on?
I figured that after I glue them they will not be perfectly even anyway so I would have to sand them. I don't have access to a planer as this is the best solution post glue-up. I may just leave them as finished and do my best with cauls to get the alignment correct.Regards,
