I’m having a problem making a molding for the top of some spice boxes I’m making. I’m trying to make a molding with a 1 inch ogee and a 1/4 cove under it , I made a rebate for the cove then used a 1/4 round plane to make the cove.It just doesn’t look right. Does anyone know of a book that describes making molding using molding planes? Maybe Larry Williams should write a book. Thanks for any help Jerry

Jerry,
Generally a cove used with an ogee won't have 90º of arc. Most are about 66º and set at an angle to a line that would split the arcs of the ogee. If you made a full 1/4" rabbet, then you're using a 90º arc. I think you can make the proportions work out okay with the planes you're using if you're using a #4 round instead of a true cove plane. You can start your cove with a smaller rabbet or even a "Vee" groove and enlarge the profile until things look right.
I hope this helps and I've managed to visualize what you're having trouble with. Graham Blackburn's Traditional Woodworking Handtools is a pretty good source of information on using molding planes. There are also old and new catalogs that show a number of these complex moldings which will serve as a good starting place for getting things going in the right direction as far as proportion. Many of the new catalogs also contain a number of bad examples. I like the bad examples as much as the good ones because it's always nice to be able to learn from the mistakes of others. I do think I remember lessons better when I learn them the hard way, though. If you've got your planes working well for you, you've got the hard part done. It sounds like you're on your way.
Larry thanks for the advice , I'll try making the Vee grove and just enlarge it. Thanks again Jerry
