Hi, I am currently building a fireplace surround using oak ply, red oak trim moulding, and pine crown moulding.
Since each of these materials takes stain differently, should I use a prime on everything before applying the stain? If so, which primer do you recommend? Both the stain and polyurethane I am using are water based.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Seems to me you are asking for trouble. If the veneer on the ply is a good match to the red oak trim, then toss the pine, make up some oak crown molding to match and save yourself a lot of heartache. If you're absolutely set on doing it the hard way, start experimenting with scraps of each. It'll never be more than 90% OK, and even that much will try your patience.

Thanks for the reply ... at this time I guess I have to do the trial and error method.LoneRider
