Last Saturday I was getting some stuff at HD here in Durham, NC and I met a guy in the tool section who makes pens on the lathe with small pieces of wood. I offered to give the guy a bunch of curly maple scraps I had collected and some curly birch. I was happy to see the wood go to some project.
Turns out this guy was an old Army vet that used to care for horses out in Ft Riley. On a short notice invite I stopped by his place last night and forged some files into chisels and knives(3 1/2 hours). This guy knew heating and how to temper steel like I knew how to do an autorotation in a Huey. Just watching this guy shape the material at his forge was magic.
It all happened with a small piece of wood. Love it.
I guess this is a pitch for saving the scraps??

Cool, that's one of those serendipitous moments that one remembers forever. Very cool.
It is like a very nice Christmas story.
God Bless
