I am interested in constructing a vacuum press for veneer work after two of my friends had great sucess with plans from VeneerSupplies.com. Does anyone have any cost saving tips for constructing home made systems, or any pitfalls to avoid?

http://www.vacupress.com has a woonderful forum on vacuum veneering that I read through before I started my project.
I went to an uphostery store and ordered very heavy(20 gauge) vinyl and then used
contact cement and tuck tape to close up one side and the bottom. We slipped everything in the top and then sealed it using silicone rubber gaskets with boards and clamps. You can order a fitting from the above url.
I borrowed a pump from an hrv installer so my total cost for 4 x 8 press was 150.00. They also sell the glue and have lots of info on their site as to proper use.
Have fun and make sure you leave it in the bag long enough. I had a problem(blisters) that went away when I convinced my helper to leave it in the bag longer.
Lots of heat during the curing is a good thing.
Easy as pie-have fun
