I am in the market for a high quality shop vacuum and would appreciate some recommendations. I want one to function in the shop as my only means of dust collection for small tools like sanders, biscuit joiners, and routers, and possibly for the table saw and planner, if I ever buy one. Of course I’d also like to be able to carry to the job site, etc.
I don’t expect I’ll ever set-up a proper dust collection system, so I figured I would just buy a good vac and use that.
Based on what I’ve read, I’m considering the Bosch 3931 for $400, the Fein 9-77-25 for $289, and the PC 7814 for $329. Links below.
Most important is good consistent suction and good filtering of small partials. I think they all have auto start. I hope to be able to fit any of them with the bigger hoses needed for collection on a larger machine like a table saw.
What say ye? Thanks

Planers and jointers produce vast quantities of shavings that would overwhelm any shop vac. For table saws and hand held tools almost any size machine will be adequate.
Switching the vac hose from one machine to another gets old quickly. Consider buying a few less expensive Ridgid brand vacs and fitting them with Goretex Clean Stream filters. Leave each vac permanently connected to a single machine.

I am not familiar with Goretex Clean Stream filters. Tell me more.
Thanks
Go to any Lowes and take a look.
Circular pleated cartridge, around $35/each if you go for the HEPA version, less for the nearly HEPA.
They can be cleaned by rinsing/brushing gently.
Made for Sears or ShopVac brand vacs.
ShopVac sell their own HEPA filters which cost far less.
Pre-filter bags are highly recommended in combination with these filters.
