I am about to put my first marquetry work into the vacuum press and I am anticipating a problem: Will the glue squeeze through the seams and spoil the surface? I don’t have a problem with taped seams, but there are kerfs and gaps that might cause me trouble.
The face side of the work is covered with blue tape. Can I expect this problem?

Howdy,
First issue is the use of blue tape on the show side. You could have difficulties removing this tape after pressing. Water soluble veneer tape is recommended for the show side. The blue tape is used on the glue side for assembly of the picture. It is removed after applying the veneer tape to the show side and before pressing.
Glue will penetrate through porous veneers and gaps. I have used two different techniques for dealing with this. You can fill the gap before pressing from the glue side. Apply veneer tape on the show side over the gap and apply some appropriately colored filler from the glue side. The second way is to use colored veneering adhesive. This works well for porous veneers like burls. Unibond 800 comes in light and dark colors, and the two can be mixed to get an intermediate shade. The glue is quite hard after it sets, and can be sanded smooth.
You should use a separation layer between the clamping caul and the veneer. Visqueen works and I have also used plastic window screen successfully. The screen also adds a little compliance to help deal with veneers of varying thickness.
Good luck, Tom.
Tom:Just wanted to follow up on some tips you gave me. I found that applying filler before pressing gave the best result. When I didn't apply the filler, the glue did migrate to the top. Because my marquetry work had various colors, there was no way I could match the glue color to avoid it showing. There were a few areas where the glue got into the grain and was very hard to remove.Using blue tape for the face side did work well. I wanted to avoid working with gum tape if it could be helped. Thanks for the help.
for those little holes made when turning the blade or any open seams i mix up some 5 minute epoxy and color it with powdered painters' tints. it seals the holes and no glue from pressing migrates to the surface.jerry
Thanks Jerry. That's an excellent option to the wood fillers.
