I purchased vacuum pump at my local surplus store ($24.95). It is a Thomas Industries twin cylinder diaphragm type, kinda small (about 12″ long or so). the model number is illegible and I am unable to find it on the thomas website. My question is, how do the vacuum lines hook up? Each cylinder has its own intake and exhaust ports. If I hook up a vacuum gage to either intake port, I get 20″hg. If I hook up the exhaust port from one cylinder to the intake port of the other , I then get 26″hg on the gage. More vacuum is obviously better, but will I cause problems or damage by doing this?

It sounds like a two stage pump. Google "two stage vacuum pump" and look for specs similar to yours and go from there. 20" Hg is not enough of a vacuum for pressing unless you're really high up, like 10,000 feet or so.

The cylinders are the same size. Here is a picture of the vacuum pump. any ideas on what the model # might be as well as how the vacuum lines should go would be greatly appreciated
I would say you have a two-stage, All you need now are the attachments to hook it up to your lathe for some great bowl turning.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!
