Go to Joewoodworker.com this site has some good information on making your own vacuum systems. You can buy heavy clear vinyl from some marine suppliers or canvas awning fabricators, same material used for boat canopy windows. imperialinc.com has a source for glue that works with vinyl.

Being one to try to do things on the cheap while experimenting, I made a vaccuum veneering set up out of a refrigerator compressor from a refrig someone dumped at the edge of the tomato field to the south.
For a bag, I bought some "contractor cleanup bags" at Orchard Supply. They are heavy duty poly. I put a metal tube (1/4") through a hole in the bottom and then use tape and some silicone to close off the hose. I put in the project and wrap the open end of the bag around a 1"x1"x3' stick. I then clamp a second stick to the first with the wrapped plastic between with a ton of spring clamps. It works!
Vacuum veneering works very well. Soon, I'll buy a real bag and maybe a real pump.
By the way, what do folks use for adhesive? I've used both West System epoxy and titebond.
