I’m working a plans for a cabinet that will have a sterling silver wire and mother of pearl flower design inlay. I plan on finishing the cabinet with wipe on varnish as described in a past FWW article. Now my question. Do I varnish directly over top of the silver and mother of pearl? Or do I finish the cabinet, then insert the inlay pieces? This will be my first attempt at inlaying anything, so I hope that this question isn’t stupid. Thanks for your help.

You would clean out your inlay cavity. Glue in your inlays and sand them flush with the surround surface. Then put your finish over the completed piece. If you were to finish first with the cavity already cut you would fill it with finish and if you tried to inlay after finishing you wouldn't be able to level your inlays with out sanding the finish completely off again. Hope this help. Good Luck.
