I have a remnant of a glue lam beam I want to turn into an outdoor bench. Am thinking of coating it with some leftover marine grade epoxy to really seal it. But I know that epoxy is not highly uv resistant. So I thought I would go over it with some marine grade varnish like epifane. But am wondering about surface prep. Just light sanding over the epoxied surface?

Bill,
Been a while, but I was involved in building a couple stripper canoes that were encased in fiberglass/epoxy. As I recall, we wiped the epoxied surface down with lacquer thinner before sanding, to get rid of "amine blush", whatever that is. Sanding provides a tooth for the varnish to grab onto, improving adhesion to the surface.

varnish over epoxy
Hello, wash cured epoxy with soap and water to remove amine blush. When dry sand surface with 220 grit. I usually go further with 320 also. Test your varnish on a scrap piece of wood that has epoxy coating on it. Some varnishes do not cure when applied over epoxy.
