My three year old daughter smeared vaseline on an unfinished fir door. Will I have trouble applying a water based stain. If so what can I do.
Thanks for any help.

I believe that I would simply sand the door to remove the Vaseline.
*Vaseline is a petroleum product and will clearly cause a problem with any stain and final finish. You may be sucessful by repeably wiping the spot with mineral spirits and constantly changing the cloth. Then carefully sand the whole door. You may want to go with an oil stain. After the stain completely cures, you can overcoat it with a waterbourne finish although an oil based clear finish will prove a longer lasting finish if it is to be an outside door.
*I think I might try acetone or alcohol to remove the vaseline, then rinse with mineral spirits before sanding. I have refinished sausage benches with mucho grease and this has worked.
*Another thing you can try is to lay down some brown paper (say from a grocery bag) or paper towel, and iron over it. Keep this up until the paper stays oil free.To test, try wiping some water over the wood and see if it behaves differently over the oil spot than in other places.Good luck,Rod Cole
*What you want to avoid doing is moving the Vaseline further into the wood. This means somehow drawing the stuff out of the wood into something else. I have used a "poultice" for this purpose on fabric stains and concrete floors. You mix up a bunch of powder (talcum powder, NOT cornstarch [!!!!!] is good) with some sort of solvent that dissolves the stain. In your case, mineral spirits are good, and low in toxicity, cheap, and leave no residue.DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!!! Mineral spirits are flammible. Make sure of ventilation!!!!The solvent dissolves the Vaseline. As it evaporates from the surface of the powder, solvent moves from the floor into the powder, carrying the gunk with it. Then vacuum up the powder. Several applications might be necessary.
