I am in need of a 4 1/2 column to be placed on a fireplace mantel and was wondering if i could cover PVC pipe with wood veneer? Would contact cement hold the veneer on the PVC ? Thanks for any help

Scott,
I've never tried it. I've never wanted to try it. Why not get some bender ply, two ply material and see if it can make that kind of bend? Put some round end caps on it or in it to stabilize the shape and then pop your veneer onto that using either hide glue or contact cement if the veneer has a paper backing. I think it would hold much better.
If the bender ply can't make that bend, then I'd get some 1/4" ply and do a kerf bend. Make a series of saw kerfs in the ply about 2/3 of the thickness through on pretty close center. You'll see that as you make the succession of kerf cut the ply will become pretty wiggly and you'll be able to bend it to your curve. Play with the distance between kerf cuts to see what you need to get your bend. Then veneer over that. Best of luck. Gary
