I am in the market for a veneer hammer. I was a bit surprised to find I could pay as much as eighty dollars for a new one. Am I missing something? Or is a good veneer hammer worth that? Are there other options or better places to shop? Thanks.

This is one of those cases where making one is the easy way to go.
I don't remember what I paid for mine, but it was nowhere near that amount. I made one, and used anodized aluminum for the blades, one convex, the other concave to match the curved structure I was covering. The head I made out of cherry, along with the handle. Two screws hold in the blade I'm needing at the time, and both can be changed out in a minute or two.
Thanks for the input. I suspected it would be a tool that I'd be better off building than buying. I hadn't thought of the interchangable blade idea but I sure like that idea and will use it. Well off to find some suitable metal and I've got lots of wood scraps.
I made mine too. I used scrape teak for the body and brass for the blade. I took about 3 hours all told and that included a fancy turned handle.
I made mine from wood scraps. The "blade" is UHMW plastic. Despite it being pretty crude, the thing has preformed perfectly with 8 years of fairly heavy use.

I used a strip of plexiglass to make the blade. Easy to round over and has worked well.
