hi, wifey wants a new finish on dark stained veneer table top (‘ you can do anything honey”) ..gentlemen (and or ladies) never let your ego get you into this position… anyways..its very dark stain..do I sand it down like my boat’s brightwork and start staining and hoping to get it right or what? dont mind trying just dont want to do it twice or three times..

once you remove the film finish, you can sand the veneer, but only so far. At that point it would be better to apply wood bleach(two part) then lightly hand sand from 150g to 220g.

I'd use a furniture stripper, I still like 5F5. Nothing else has worked as well. Read the precautions. It may lift quite a bit of the color. Whenever I've used the two part bleach, it has turned the surface of the wood into pulp. I would be cautious using it on veneer. Keep sanding to the bare minimum or you'll be through the veneer before you know it.
