Hello,
Has anyone used a water base stain and finish on veneer? The top of the cedar chest will be a new application, while the rest of chest is the original veneer. Also would like some thoughts on the self adhesive veneer as a possible choice for the above application using the water base or oil base stain and finish. Also, what type of finish (stain and top coat) would be over what looks like a flat “grey” base coat. Have seen this situation before, but over solid wood, but not veneer. What kind of potential problems will this present? Thanks for any help. Rick
PS Will be using General Finishes, which I have had GREAT success with, using all three types.(gel, oil, and water in both stain and top coat.)

There is no reason that the water based stains & finishes wouldn't work over your veneer. Unless, of course, you have done something really wrong along the way.
All plywood is veneer on the surface.

Hello Hal J
Thank you for your reply, the stain I would like to use is water base. The color best represents the original look. I really like your website!!..In the past I have rebuild and finished mantels and have made a few Mission style pieces of furniture.
Thanks Again, Rick
Thanks Rick,
I like to use waterbased stains too. I like the rich colors.
And I use General Finishes Polycrylic finish a lot, and really like it. It is so incredibly easy to use, and always gives a good finish. I've never had a problem with it. I find that it is really easy to touch up too.
