A quick question to all or any who have veneered before. If I have an odd shaped piece of veneer do I have to glue it to a smaller piece of ply and then trim the excess or can I float it in the middle of a larger substrate and then trim it to size after the glue up? The later technique seams like it would keep my options open in terms of which part of the veneer I find most appealing. Has anyone done it this way and are there any inherent pitfalls to watch for. The veneer I will be using is a heavily burled walnut. thanks for the input

Chri7s,
There is no problem with gluing a piece of veneer to a larger substrate and later sawing to size. At the risk of stating the obvious, you'd have to watch when sawing that the saw teeth point towards the back side so any tear-out wouldn't ruin your face veneer. As with any veneer project, a balancing veneer may be required on the back side to prevent warping.

Thanks Rob. I think I'll give it a try both ways.
