Veneering a large panel with shop veneer
Howdy, I’m finally making some progess on a display case. The case interior is ~24×36″ and will have a back panel of 1/2″ MDF with sycamore veneer (Both sides). The veneer strips are about 5″ wide and I’ve been planning to attempt the job with hot hide glue/hammering. However, as I’ve been reviewing books, blogs, posts, etc., I’m concerned this will prove to be tricky becase the veneer is a bit more than 3/32″ thick. I’ve played around with smaller sheets and that went reasonably well, but… I’m planning to edge glue (reinforced with tape) the strips into a single veneer sheet, but this may be too big to do with hide glue? or Glue individual strips, but they are to thick to overlap and trip as in traditional veneering, and am concerned with getting a decent edge joint… Any hope for doing this by hammering or do I just need to track down a veneer press and do it with yellow glue? Thanks all. C

I would edge glue the strips with white glue - and tape.

I'm a huge fan of hammer
I'm a huge fan of hammer veneering, but I don't think this is a candidate for it. The veneer is a bit thicker than I'd be comfortable with, and I'm not sure how the glue joints would hold up the the heat and moisture that is part of hammer veneering.

Two options with large panels, veneer press with Unibond or contact cement.
Contact cement is a very poor choice. One wants a rigid glue line for veneer. Contact cement give exactly the opposite.
Thanks all. Sounds like a veneer press is the way to go. Will look around for a friend with one or will build one.
don't give up on the idea of
don't give up on the idea of hide glue -
- if you used hide glue you do not have to first glue the edges because you would overlap the edges as you go and cut through both veneers to get a good seam.
