I once had an engineer recommend to me that I should remove the top bag of my DC then attach a piece of plywood w/6″ PVC pipe where the bag was and run the 6″ PVC outside of the house. The PVC would replace the bag and he assured me it would “greatly improve” the DC’s performance.
Any thoughts or comments?

It's a great idea if the heat and air conditioning in your shop are free.
Edited to correct polarity error in logic. That'll teach me not to post on too little sleep.

don't mean to change the subject but can anyone recommend a dust collector for a avg size basement shop I have to decide today. Delta? Dustboy?
this might be too late but, I'd highly recommend getting a bigger one than you think you need. It seems that you never have enough power with the portable ones.John E. Nanasy
Use the Advanced Search button near the top of the left frame and search for the exact phrase "dust collector". We have dust collector discussions going more or less continuously.
thanks for the tip.
Did this "engineer" say anything about where the dust would go, or did he tell you it would be a cheap cyclone? I can see where it MIGHT work with an empty lower bag, and not much sanding dust. As the bag filled the dust would have nowhere to go but out. This may not be a problem if you run your dc infrequently, and you aren't worried about killing bushes downwind of the exhaust. I'm assuming he's talking about a home shop, since any production shop will generate too much waste for this method to handle. If you're in suburbia, I don't think your neighbors will appreciate it, either.
Performance of a dust collector is not just how much air it moves, but how much dust it actually collects. If you don't want to empty the bag as much, get a cyclone in front of the dc, or use more hand tools.
