I happened onto a segment of Fox News today on TV dealing with recession-resistant businesses, featuring an auto repair shop; the bus. owner stated that his business was very good lately, that customers were keeping cars longer, choosing to have them repaired rather than laying out scarce cash for a new one.
Any woodworkers out there now seeing more requests for cabinet/furniture repair than last year? I have generally taken in any repair work that came along, but never really advertised for it, now considering it.
Any suggestions, ideas, thoughts, appreciated as always.
Thanks, Gary

Mohawk offers a course and obviously sells a kit to do cosmetic repair work on furniture. It's always been a big thing for the furniture dealers as accidents happen during deliveries so it's been a steady ongoing repair business for many years. Certainly cheaper than the dealer replacing the piece. Antique restoration has always been a big business. You can make a living repairing furniture.
I do repair work exclusively. Business was up 35% last year over 2007. At this point, I do not advertise other than word of mouth.
Part of it may be whom you are catering to. My business is fairly diversified with local & internet retailers, designers, movers, delivery services, insurance adjusters, warranty work, and individual consumers and businesses.
dm ,
I got my start in repair and restorations and refinishing , chair cane , weaving and such .
One would think more folks would repair instead of replace but ,,
It may really depend on your area and the market you are in , a larger local with larger populations are going to be best as opposed to small in general .
My personal theory is when folks don't have extra money or even enough to get by they will not pay us 25 - 50 $ an hour that we are worth to fix their old furniture .They may just throw the broken chair out in the yard like they did in the old day's .
If you offer a complete stripping and refinishing as well as repairs you will have a broader audience to draw from .
good luck dusty
