Veritas-based shooting fence – donkey’s ear.
A Veritas shooting board fence is on it’s way to my shed (shop) for mounting on a self-made shooting board.
I’ll use the basic design of shooting board recommended by Veritas in the associated user-manual for this fence
https://assets.leevalley.com/Original/10092/76880-veritas-shooting-board-fence-c-01-e.pdf
but I would like to add a donkey’s ear sub-fence for use in shooting longer mitres such as the corners of mitred boxes.
Has anyone set up a Veritas shooting fence to take some form of donkey’s ear sub-fence as well as the simple straight sub-fence used for square-ends and mitred ends?
Any advice or recommendations gratefully received.

Hi, I have that exact set up that you are making. I did buy the whole board from Veritas because I tried making one and it wasn’t as accurate as I would like. I use it often and for everything - boxes, mixers, picture frames etc. I’m really happy with the accuracy.
I’ve attached 3 pictures below that show my set up including the donkey’s ear I made for it from Baltic birch ply. I sunk large washers into the base to use the mag switches to hold it firmly. It turned out great. Let me know if you have questions and I’ll try to help.
Cheers! Layne
Layne,
That looks just the thing, especially using those mag-switches as they can be used for other purposes besides attaching the d-ear. I do use mag-switch feather boards on the table saw so I'm familiar with their strength.
I did consider the Veritas shooting board and track but I already have a very heavy (brass & steel) traditional mitre plane for shooting and it's too wide for the Veritas track when operating on its side. So I must make my own shooting board .... which does give an opportunity to include other features perhaps. I'll add things like a channel to collect dust/swarf below the shooting edge; and some of that slippy tape to help the plane on it's way. And hopefully a d-ear. :-)
Is that d-ear a solid block or constructed from joined parts to make the monolith?
Do you have any means to tweak the angle of the d-ear slope so it's an exact 45 degrees or must one get the construction dead-on when making it?
In all events, I'd be grateful for any further details you can provide.

Lataxe.
Hi Lataxe,
It is constructed of many pieces of 3/4 inch Baltic birch ply.
45 degrees during construction is really important and minor tweaks can be made using a low angle block plane. It’s quite tricky because it has to be square in 2 directions but you’ll get it! I used a Starett combination square and it really helped.
In use, if you’re not getting the exact angle you want, slightly skew the plane blade to get the result you need but the ramp needs to be extremely close for everything to work.
All the best!

Hello Layne,
Thank you for the explanation regarding the donkey ear implementation with Veritas shooting board. I would like to ask the diameter value of the metal washers used to anchor the MagJig and as well which MagJig unit have you used: 60, 90, 150 ?
Thank you very much,
With regards,
Andrei.
The washers are about 3 cm and the mag switches are the MAGJIG 95 size (also called 20mm on Lee Valley) and mount in a 30mm hole drilled with a forstner bit. When installing the washer, it has to be flush with the top surface. Hope this helps and have a great day and stay well.
Lane, Thank you very much for the info, just ordered the MagJig kit.
With regards,
Andrei
