Folks:
I just received my low angle jointer plan from Veritas that I purchased at the Indy WW show with free shipping. The iron arived with a small chip the corner. I know I can grind it out. But is it reasonable to ask for a new iron without the chip.
I have heard wonderful things about Veritas’ cust. service and will use it. But I do not want to be too picky either.
Your comments are appreciated.
Thanks
Thank you,
Cheatah

Call up Lee Valley and ask them to replace it. It should have arrived in perfect shape, IMHO.

Lee Valley is the sort of company that would feel bad if you didn't ask them to replace it.
call them up, their service is the best in th business
as somebody else already put, THEY would be upset if you didnt
it can definely be ground away, but be patient and keep it cool
in my experience LV wont want to bother getting it back, they'll just send you a new one
I live uite near a few of the Lee Valley retail stores and have purchased many items over the past few years. I have never had a bad experience when returning anything to them. I think with the cost of a veritas jointer plane being a couple of hundred, you are definately entilted to a plane with no defects whatsoever.
Hi Gang:
I sent an email to Veritas and within 60 minutes they responded to me. They are going to send me a replacement out and it will be at my door step within 4 days.
I am delighted with Veritas' service. Everyone was dead on --- Veritas is a top notch company with outstanding customer service. This makes me want to order something else from them right away.---- Maybe a smothing plane?
Thanks to everyone for their comments.
Thank you,
Cheatah
LV- no surprises, no worries.Glaucon
If you don't think too good, then don't think too much...
Glad to see your experience with Lee Valley was as good as mine have been. Excellent company, great products, great service. Damn...it's almost enough to make me want to move to Canada. (since I grew up in the UP of Michigan, I already speak the language) :)Jim"There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. I have their bevel up smoother. Its great!
Like any other bevel up plane you can change the angle by changing the blades. I have all 3 'stock' angles.
The bevel up is the real way to go for a smoother: besides the fact you can easily change angles, the blades swap out in a few seconds - no screw direver required. Makes it easy to sharpen too. Also, the mouth adjusts very easily - no screwdriver either.
ps: there are many other reasons to live up here than LV. We just don't advertise.
These people would be disappointed to learn you had any problem at all! They will welcome your returning this blade.
I went thru somewhat the same on another product and they made me feel very good about the return process!!
was in Lee Valley to day to pick up a few things
you know you go there two often when the clerks call you by name before seeing your slip and ask you if you have shares in the place
i have got to remind myself i have a addiction to the place
Contact Lee Valley. I am sure they will do everything they can to make it right. I was in three months ago to replace my Veritas double square which broke after falling off my bench. When I mentioned the fact my old one broke, the sales girl insisted I take a replacement part (no charge) instead of selling me the new one. That's customer service IMHO.

Valley Lee is one of the best companies on the market, they stand by their tools and the best customer service that I have seen. I e-mailed them a question about a cabinet scrapper and not 10 mins. later I got a call from customer service and explained the problem. Call them
I have happily delt with Lee Valley since 1972, and have never been disatisfied. Reading this post reconfirms my faith with them. So, my question is, if these guys(LV) have been able to keep so many people happy for so long, how come other businesses can't do the same?????
Pedro
Pedro,
Maybe it has to do with the old way of thinking. Give the customer good value for the money and back this up with great customer service and you have a business that has a wonderful reputation. From what I understand the have been in quite some time and hopefully will be for a long time coming.

I don't know if is the old way or the new way, but it sure works. That company should be used as an example of success in the retail world. They show that service and quality are a moneymaking proposition, and that there is no excuse for anything else. If we support those kinds of businesses, we insure their continued existence. The other thing I like about LV is that they have a couple of different lines of each tool, with different costs, but none of their tools are poor quality. The cheap ones are still good, just not as good. I have never been able to find the same tool cheaper somewhere else.

I flew next to a LV employee once and we had a long chat.
Long story short, its the company culture. Run by the family so no quarterly earnings to worry about. Everybody takes pride in working there. They look after their employees.
All those out of fashion dumb ideas MBAs (like me) tell people aren't important anymore.

Lee Valley is the reason I will still use mail order (Veritas is their company). Their policy is truly one of keeping the customer happy. They will replace it in a heartbeat and a smile.
I once ordered an 1 3/4" Forstener bit. I received a 3/4 bit". When I called they apologized sincerely, told me to keep the one I received and I had the right one the next day by UPS. JL

I second everything said about LV in this post! I'm dating myself, but I remember the arrival of the Sears catalogs! Today the only comparable event is the arrival of LV catalogs and getting to order something.
Now all we need to do is get them to start a hand tool museum to display all their treasures!
