I see that Lee Valley has added a new Veritas Hand Plane. It is a Low angle smoothing plane. Has anyone rushed out and purchased one yet? Any feed back?

I have held off on dropping the wad on a basic set (#41/2, 5, 7 and smoother) of Lie-Nielsen tools. If veritas comes out with the #7, I think I know where my mula is going to go.

I haven't tried one of the Veritas bench planes, but I'm a little suspicious of the frog and mouth engineering. Since the frog actually forms part of the sole, I would worry that the frog would stick below or above the sole of the plane at certain adjustments--which it certainly will do if the machining of the frog and the bed are not perfect.

that low angle smoother looks as if its not the adj frog variety of the standard style bench veritas offers
Since its a 12 degree angle combined with a 25 degree blade bevel it makes for a 37deg slicing. (w/o figuring your microbevel) its morning and im not thinking too great yet (as if i ever do) i think bench planes are set at 45 degrees.
it looks like its basically a no 4 smoother (stanely style) and since its low angle bevel up, there is no chip breaker. (I think the jury is still out on the effectiveness of chipbreakers)
i dunno, personally at that price is head over to L-N and pick up a Low angle Jack plane and get another 3 and a half inches.
The design is basically a low angle block plane with a wider blade and a longer base.
i thought it seemed like a lot of $, too. that's because the link showed canadian dollars. u.s is $139, a pretty good price when compared to the l-n. all the reviews i've heard of their block plane have been very favorable..... so if this one follows suit, i think i might order one.

At $139 US it is a fair bit cheaper than the Lie Nielsen version and is also a small bit bigger. I was looking at getting the Lee Valley low angle block plane with the ball and tail but this new plane looks more like what I am looking for.Scott C. Frankland

ah did not pay attention to the currency. My bad.
i have the lee valley low angle block plane. I am very happy with it. considering the exchange rate, the l-n handplanes in canada are very expensive. it is different from the lee valley 41/2 and 51/4 plane in terms of the frog. it is more similar to the bed of the l-n. anyway from a cost perspective the lee valley is very good - i recommend it
Dale,
I recently purchased the low angle block plane, it is an excellent tool. The fit and finish are first rate, with only minor tuning (honing, which you do with any new iron) required.
