Recently Forestgirl in another thread mentioned the Veritas Router Table Top and looking at the catalog description it seems ( and the catalog shows) the top is mounted on “top” of a router table or stand so that the largest work surface would be 16″x24″(the size of the top). Since this is a little smaller than the other tables (for example JessEm at 24″x 32″), I was considering getting this top and “dropping” it into a larger table surface but since it is “slightly convex”( to prevent deformity when adding the router) maybe it wouldn’t allow for this type of installation. Any experience with doing this or comments about the surface size.
The Veritas top seems a good alternative to some other much more expensive lifts and table sets.

Sailalex,
I have the Veritas steel router table top mounted as an insert in my router table. there's no real crown to it, it seems to be pretty flat with the router attached. It's not concave. Size - my table is about 24x36 with the router mounted about in the middle I think. Plenty of surface area for most operations.

Lee Valley is now selling a Veritas insert that is a small version of their router tabletop, giving the same router hold-downs on a small circular steel plate.

Hi, Sailalex, I just saw your thread. The person I bought the Veritas top from had actually made a larger, surrounding table for it to slip into, and I still have it. If you would like, I can take a picture of it and send it to you. Click on my name up above and drop me an email.

The Veritas table is actually crowned just a bit, perhaps just a few thousandths of a inch. It is designed to flatten under the weight of a large 3 HP router. I've had mine now for several years, and love it. I checked it recently with a machinist's straight edge and it's flat from corner to corner with a PC 690 router hanging underneath.
I have it mounted on the smaller LV base, which I clamp to a Workmate. I have to admit that I'm not all that fond of the base unit and would consider any option to mount it on a sturdier stand. The only problem I see with using it as an insert is that the fence is designed to clamp to the edges of the steel top, which wouldn't work if it was flush with a larger top. I have a significant investment in the fence and other accessories which mount on the fence so I would have to be convinced of a major improvement before I changed it out.

Ron
Those clever folks at Veritas have recently come out with a version of the fence that works in t-slots, to use in conjunction with the new router table insert. I don't know whether it would be possible to convert.
They sell the fence T-slot Adapters separately. See the bottom of this page.
Even keeping the configuration you have, it should be relatively simple to build a solid, cabinet-type stand to drop the plate onto, leaving the edges proud of the perimeter of the stand. Thanks for all your comments; I think this product is is probably one of the router accessories that has a lot of value compared to the alternatives.
Hi! Received your email yesterday, I sent two messages back, one as a straight reply and one through Knots. Both of them bounced! Are you sure you want to stick with AOL <g>? I guess I could take pictures of that table and post them in the classifieds for you to see, but would really like to get this email problem straightened out. Any ideas what's causing the problem?
I have an idea to try and fix the glitch. Go to this place, type [email protected] for your user name and use Knots as your password. I set up a temp mailbox under your name. Once we communicate directly, maybe your mail program will stop bouncing me (ouch!).
