Hey all! I’m thinking about buying a Veritas straight edge primarily to check my 8 inch jointner tables (which I know are off a little) mostly but I’m sure I’ll find a number of other uses for it. I’m especially interested in the 50 inch aluminum one. Anybody out there have any experience with any of these? My experience with Veritas tools has been generally very good but the prices of these things seems too good to be true.

I have one f these, as far as I can measure it appears to be as straight as my 24" Suburban brand straight edge. Mine is bowed in the other dimension though, about 0.1" I'm guessing.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. You pushed me over the edge and I'll buy one shortly.
I have the 24" aluminum one, which I bought for my jointer. I've used it for some other things here and there. The price was worth finally having my jointer set up properly. I think if I had the longer one I would use it even more. I would say go for it.

Art,
Do you know who else sells them and how Lee Valley's prices and quality compare?

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
Jazzdog, I haven't seen that type of affordable straightedge (heavy, broad stable base for standing up) in any other catalogs. The SE from Traditional Woodworker looks like a quality rule, but is designed more for measuring and drafting than specifically for machine set-up the way the Veritas SE is. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Thanks FG,
One can always hope!

"One can always hope!" No kidding. I have a feeling those Veritas SE's were probably designed and produced by them, rather than just re-labeled. I've seen several inexpensive SE's in catalogs, but they were all skinny.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Thanks for the info Art. I will buy one very soon.
jerry, try traditionalwoodworker.com. They have 40" precision german straightedges by Scala for $29.95. I own one and its nice. They have great CS too. john
Hi John -
We used to sell the Scala straight edges - and they started buying from China...

Thanks for reminding me of this! I had researched straight edges and settled upon the Lee Valley 50", but I think it was back ordered. I put it on my wish list and forgot about it.
It's now on the way!

I picked up a 60" stainless steel strait edge from a metal recycler. It was sheared from a larger piece. I took it to a machine shop to have the edge milled straight and true but it didn't need it. The cost - about $10.00
