Timp,
It's a beautiful workbench that should work very well. I built my own for much less money..may be about half the price. However, it is difficult to build without a workbench to build it....lol. The only drawback I can see is its a little high (35"), I prefer about 32-33" high and you need a little more weight..but that you can add on the bottom. Another consideration is planing the sides of boxes or draws..this style of workbench does not do all that well, however, there are work arounds.
Personally, I prefer steel vises....to minimize deflection when clamping. However, I do like the look of wood better. good luck
Bought mine in the fall when they were upgrading to aluminum double-vise chain covers. Perhaps could have been built cheaper myself, but only if you consider the cost of materials only. Got top, including vises, only. Sits on steel base cabinet at one end. (Had to put spacers between to have room for ends of bench dogs below top. Built wood cabinet for other end.
Had rapid-action steel vise on old solid-core door before, so new all-screw vises are painfully slow. But, never befor had a bench full of holes with bench dogs to match that really hold things well so I figure it's a pretty good tradeoff.
Only real gripe I have is that on the double vise
, after really cranking down on something to hold it tight, the screw-nuts have to be readjusted because they pull out of alignment & bind. Haven't really taken a look to see what the problem is. I'm guessing it may be some oversized holes that need to be closed in.
All in all, I'm very happy with it.
Paul
