I have just built the Versatile Router Table which appeared in the April 2004 edition – designed by Kevin McLaughlin. I like it forregular table use.
Now that it is built, I seem to have a problem with how to use the horizontal mount feature. The sliding plate is 3/4″ thick, and the insert I planned on inserting in the frame is about 3/8″ thick. Herein lies the problem. The shank on most of the bits I have (both 1/4 and 1/2) is not long enough to reach through to where the work would be. Did I miss something, or doees anyone have any innovative solutions?
Thanks in advance.

I don't think you are missing something, looking at the article, it isn't a well thought out design. There's going to be 1 1/8" of table pushing the router way back from the working face.
He is got away with it because he was using the large Porter Cable router which has a very long chuck assembly and on that model the motor can go very deeply into its outer base. Most other brands of routers don't have nearly as much forward reach.
The only solution, other than to buy a new PC router, is to rebuild the vertical plate so that it is thinner. One possible approach would be to set the router mounting plate into the front of the melamine plate, similar to the way the plate is set into the table.
