Hi all, I am an Architect and Woodworker starting a business salvaging wood from tree services. I have been finding some very unique woods. Since it is all green I thought about trying to turn some into bowls. I would like to find a used Vicmarc vl300 long bed(Australian Version). Does any one have one for sale or know where to find one used. It seems that the new ones are back ordered like 16 weeks or more?
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
You don't say where you're located, but if you're located in North America, consider that the Vicmarc is Austrailian and the long lead time, in part, reflects the shipping time. Maybe you might consider a Oneway? I'm pretty sure they have a lead time too, but I don't think that it's 16 weeks.

I am located in New Jersey. As far as the Oneway it seems to be alot more money for what you can get in the Vicmarc vl300 like the 24"swing and all cast iron for under 4,000.00.
Hi Jeff, I am a woodturner and have a 20" swing Powermatic with a bed extension. Great lathe. Costs 2600.00 and they have a 24" swing also. These are variable speed also which is nice. Good luck, Bob
Jeff -
While Vicmarcs are undoubtably fine lathes and would be worth waiting for, if you're in a hurry I think you'd be satisfied with the larger Powermatics. The 20" model has a moveable headstock that makes it useable as a shortbed lathe or you can do 'outboard' turning off the tailstock end. The largher 24" swing Powermatic, well both, actually, are brutes of machines.
Yes, the OneWay is a lot more money but it's the benchmark against which most turners compare machines. It really is the Cadillac of lathes but as we all know, you can get from point A to point be in a Chevy just as well as a Cadillac.
What kind of wood are you salvaging? Sounds cool!

Wow! That's terrific, Jeff. Around here about all we get from the tree service guys is rotten alder, some maple branches and lots of fir, hemlock and cedar, the latter three being worthless in my opnion for any turning projects.Great wood ya got there!...........
