I inherited this black lacquered vintage dresser with decorative decals that are flaking off in some spots. What would be the best way to preserve what remains of the existing decals and prevent further flaking off? Should I use a shellac? And if so, brush or spray? Matte or gloss? Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!

I have no expertise with decals applied to furniture. But, I think you should take individual high resolution images of them for posterity and for possible future use to recreate them if the deterioration can't be stopped.
