I recently inherited my grandfather’s old Yates 199 jointer, a 12″ model. It is in very good shape (all 1900 pounds of it!) except for the fact that it has a square cutterhead, which really isnt safe. Does anyone know where I might get a replacement round cutterhead or a custom made cutterhead? Thanks, [email protected]

No ideas on replacements, but would think for an exorbitant fee, a competent machinist would make you one.

It would be expensive, but if you are going to buy a cutterhead and have the money, go for a helical cutterhead with carbide inserts. My guess is that would set you back around $2000 for one. Another more economical option would be to buy a 12" parts jointer, salvage the cutterhead and have a machine shop modify it to fit your machine.
Without really seeing it it's hard to make a judgement but your best option is to buy an import head. The complete head from Delta with knives and all is #134-7831 for $542. Grizzly would probably be cheaper. I wouldn't bother with a spiral head or a terminus head. The only problem would be the bearing journals on a machine that old are longer babbitt type journals and on some machines it's easy to replace with pillow blocks. But with the very limited amount of info you provided I can only speculate so much. By the way I rebuild, repair and tune machines so any more advice is billable.
