I’m making a kit violin for my daughter. A real challenge & lots of fun. No illusions that it will sound like a great Italian instrument, but it will look like one! What I’d really like to do is to make her a nice case. Has anyone ever seen plans for one?
Her current case for the school violin is pretty crappy, so I don’t want to copy it. Some of them in the stores are ok, the better ones are actually made out of wood though covered with leather or vinyl. I’d like to leave the wood exposed and do some nice joinery. Thanks for any assistance.

Speaking as a former child volinist, I recommend a strong and lightweight plastic case.

The girl is 13 years old, 5'9'' & still growing (I'm 6'5", she probably won't catch me in height even if she can catch me on the ski slope). A wooden case won't be a problem, toting it to school builds character!!

I always like my rectanglar case. You use nice wood and anykind of joints you wanted to show off. If you fiberglassed it, like a wooden strip canoe, it would be fairly waterproof. Inside, the top deep enough for bows, and padding cut to shape of violin. A small box on one end to hold, rosin, extra strings and stuff.
Good luck.
I've built several sets of oval Shaker-style boxes, and can imagine modifying the design to accommodate the creation of a lightweight violin case; don't know if it would withstand the rigors to which a youngster might subject it, but your daughter would doubtless be the only child at her school with such a case were you to make one for her!

Cool idea, but definitely not tough enough for this application.Pete
