I built the workbench shown in the “Getting Started in Woodworking Season 2″ video, and was going to get the 7″ Groz Quick Release vise recommended in that series. But, these vises are on sale and I can get the 9″ for less than the original price of the 7”. I believe the 9″ will fit on the bench. My question is what are the primary benefits of using the larger vise? Other than the obvious of clamping something thicker (hard to image anything beyond what the 7″ can do), what other benefit is there?

The larger vise is likely to also be deeper, the combination translating into more gripping power. Plus, sometimes you want to hold a board across the face, rather than on edge, so the creater capacity (13" vs. 8") is handy.
