Hello all!
First time posting in this forum..
I just acquired a Wadkin Bursgreen baos 12in jointer/plainer in good condition. The wires were in bad shape so I had a friend wire it and put a new plug on. When I try to start the machine it instantly trips the breaker. I was told that there is possibly a short in the motor. Should I jump to this conclusion and get the motor fixed or are there more simple things I could check before taking that step. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi there, I'm new to fine woodworking but not to old machines. I have found a wealth of information over on Canadian woodworking.com. they have forums on vintage machinery and there are a few guys whole are incredibly knowledgeable and generous with their time and expertise, namely John Vann, Jack Forsberg, Mark Wallace, Matt Matt to name just a few . So I would encourage you to get on the forum and ask a few questions. There is most likely a string on whatever machine you need but also mods don't stop anyone from opening there own strings and showing their machines and asking for help. .
Personally I tend to steer clear of the electrical issues favouring the mechanical fixes and calling upon the forum for any help I can't seem to find out. They are a great bunch of lads. ... Good luck with your endeavors (oh I just remembered I believe mark Wallace refurbished a baos recently so he may have insights into the correct wiring also)
Thanks for a fantastic reply!
I will definitely write to them and see what turns up. It’s a shame because the machine looks like a beast and is in good shape, she just doesn’t want to turn over.
