Hi All,
New member here. Also fairly new hobbiest woodworker.
I am ready to finish a slab of black wallnut. I plan to use boiled linseed oil and maybe buff it out with a wood wax. There are a few small knot holes and cracks that I want to fill. I bought some colored Minwax wood putty for that purpose. However, after reading the Minwax directions, it states to finish the wood before applying putty.
My question is should I apply the BLO then apply the puddy? Or puddy first then BLO? Also, what about waxing? If I plan to wax, should that happen before applying putty?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Kind regards.

If you wax before puttying, the putty won't stick.
My first suggestion would be to grab some cut off scrap and dig a couple of holes in it similar to one you want to fill. Try that putty out before and after some BLO. But, this will also tell you if the color is close or not.
I am not a fan of the colored Minwax putty. It tends to be kinda chalky looking. But, I also haven't purchased any in a long time. It might be a better product now.
I usually try to find a good quality putty that is matched to the wood color. Flooring stores carry some stuff I've had good success with in the past. I use Timbermate a lot too. Then, when I put whatever finish on top of that, it matches the wood better. Not sure this is the best way, but I've done well with it.
The putty I've used does not dry. It stays soft and rubbery, and eventually comes out. I dont know about the Minwax product. Maybe you mean wood filler? For small cracks and holes, I use gel CA glue, sometimes adding sawdust if the gap is wide, or epoxy for larger defects.
pack voids with coffee grounds and thin ca glue, looks great on walnut
baden's method is simpler, I had great success using epoxy to fill voids and cracks in a slab, tinting it with dye to blend in with whatever wood you are using. However, you probably want to stay simpler than epoxy if the imperfections, voids, and cracks are tiny.
I try to minimize scrap so if a knot is going to be placed/hidden on the inside of a piece I have some powdered graphite I add to 2 part clear epoxy and fill the hole. The black color seems to blend well with the knot. If there is a small pin hole from a knot on the face side I will do the same and then sand smooth.
