A friend has a walnut tree in his side yard. It was on the way out last year and did not leaf this year. Diameter is about 20 inches.
My question is would the wood, provided no rot, still be good for making into lumber and air drying or should a tree be taken down while still growing? What positives/negatives should I expect?
Your thoughts are appreciated.

What you do is cut it down, debark it, cut it into lumber and send it to me and I'll let you know how it turns out in a few months. LOL

I have done this with two walnut trees in the past. Honestly, if you do not have the portable band saw to do it yourself, it is probably not worth your time and effort. Yes, you can do it but the cost is such that you will not save any money. Also consider that only the heart wood in walnut is the dark wood so a tree that size and little of the dark wood. You can turn the sap wood dark by steaming it. Other than that you can use the sap wood and stain it along with the dark wood and enjoy the contract. It can look good.
about two years ago i cut down three black walnut trees that were, for ,the most part, dead. one with little life. I cut them down and took them to a mill on the other side of town. they produced about 700 bf and have dried well in my garage. i am just now starting to use the material.
