Folks:
I am about to begin making walnut counters and breakfast bar for our kitchen. (Three year and counting project!). I made a test piece of the breakfast counter using dressed 3/4″ stock. It has held up better than I thought it would.
The final product will be about 12″ wide and 9 feet long. I plan to 5/4 stock and plane it down to around 1″ thick. Should I try to get a single piece 12″ wide, or use two pieces 6″? If two, how should I go about glue them. The test piece I just butt glued with no biscits (sp?). Should I use them, or perhaps Krieg pocket screws? The main Kitchen counters will be around 30″ wide, so they will have to be glued up of course. If it matters, I will be finishing them with mineral oil.
Thanks in advance for sharing your experinece and wisdom….

*I made a kitchen counter out of a single 24" wide5/4 mahogany plank. It looks beautiful andhas held up very well for four years butit was a lot of workto get it planed and square and all those nicethings and it working with a single pieceof wood made it difficult. It also has cupped and twisted a little over the years, pulling my cabinets out of true so I have hadto adjust all the doors and drawers. If I was doing it again I wouldn't hesitateto use wood but I would go 6" and glue itup. This would give me a squarer, flatterboard and I could alternate grain to reducemovement. No one seems to be impressed thatmy countertop is a single plank until I pointit out...
