First of all thanks to everyone that gave me some people to contact to find some crotch figured walnut. This is a learning curve for me. I have been away from the walnut a few years and building up my collection of curly maple. Folks – its not easy to find relatively small pieces of figured walnut. As some of you know, the Bird desk has two panels in the bookcase approximately 12 x 32″ and roughly 5/8″ thick. I thought it would be easier to find some killer panels to put in. Not so fast…..
Most of the stuff that has the figure to put in the center of the panel is part of a slab from the west coast that looks more like a table top than a thin panel piece. I’ll keep searching but its looking more and more like the old veneer route for this project. Again, thanks to all that offered some help I really appreciate it

I don't know if it is what you are looking for but Sam Talarico at Talarico hardwoods had some amazing crotch pieces (large and small) when I went a few months back (he is in Pennsylvania). If you give him a description of what you want, I would trust him to pick out a good piece.

I'm working with Sam right now. Seems like a good guy. More to come.

Gilmer is a good suggestion. The only walnut they carry is Claro and of that they only carry figured specimens. If you email them with what you want they can cut or resaw to your specifications. I've picked up several amazing-looking pieces of figured walnut there over the last year or so. Typically they carry curly type figured walnut but I do have one piece of crotch walnut that I bought there.
Try Goby Walnut in Oregon. That's where I get most of my Walnut.

Go to the numbered boards link--for the links, scroll down a page. Ugly web site, wonderful wood.
Take care, Mike
