Hi All!
Anyone out there ever heard of a wood species referred to as walnut eyes?
Someone was describing a dining room piece built of walnut eyes
Maybe a highly figured walnut?

Walnut burl most likely
Sounds like it could be oysters. Veneers of thinly sliced cross sections of branches. Walnut was a common choice.
Thanks for your repy. Oysters? I haven't heard this term before. I got the impression that this was a solid lumber piece, but I'll have my friend take a closer look for veneering.

Here's an article on figure types - although I didn't see "walnut eyes". The people at Certainly Wood are extremely helpful and I'm sure you could give them a call to find out what that might be.

Thanks!
check out that "quilted" figure!

Could be they're refering to birdseye walnut. Same as birdseye maple, only it's walnut. Quite rare. I have a small jag of birdseye walnut veneer that I bought at least 20 yrs. ago. I got it from Bob Morgan Woodworking in Louisville Ky. I don't know if he's still in business. I haven't seen his advertisements in years.
