I need a finish for walnut that will stay dark over time using shellac and dye that I will like and keep my teacher happy as well. He likes light finishes for walnut he has even suggested using acid to age it. I like staining the walnut really dark and letting it age to a medium color but my question is there a way to get and keep that medium color now.

I refinished some walnut saw handles a few weeks ago. I used Lockwood's aniline dye followed by a dark walnut oil stain. I got a really nice chocolate brown color. The aniline dyes are light fast. The dye/stain combo works very well with open grain species like walnut, mahogany, etc. Use the top coat of your choice.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
will a medium walnut with a ruby shellac give me the color im looking for
Colors are always an individual taste. The best way is to do a sample on some scrap. Make sure you label the scrap with what you did, so in the future, you will have a reference.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I would just use a colored wax to give it a dark patina over an Oil Finish.Regards,
