I’m Thinking of picking up about 1100 bd/ft of walnut. I figure for that much I should be able to go directly to the source instead of going through a distributor.
I’m in Northern Canada.
Anyone have a supplier?
Cheers

Just about any medium size sawmill in the eastern half of the US should have what you seek, that limits you to about 5000 mills. here in Minnesota Black walnut grows in the southern part of the state but Mills in Iowa seem to have more customers than Mills in Minnesota, thus a lot of our Black walnut is resold into Iowa..
1100 bd.ft. of walnut, what grade? Mill run? FAS? #2 BorC? what length and width? I assume 4/4 but I'd need to know.. How much early wood is acceptable? if you want all heart wood and the mill is forced to reject a great deal of wood your cost per bd. ft. will go up dramatically.
I'm able to buy Black walnut for around $1.65 to $1.85 a bd.ft. when I buy mill run. at that price they pretty much eliminate any early wood for me.. FAS can be a bit higher especially if I want really wide boards.

Do you get this locally? If not how much is your shipping? I'm only 2 1/2 hrs south of you and am looking for a better deal than the closest hardwood supplier: $5.55/bd ft.
The Canadian supplier I have Can get me a lift of poor quality walnut with knots and such for $3.47 Canadian a foot. Then I would have to freight from Edmonton Alberta to the Yukon

I am happy paying $6/bdft plus shipping for walnut. A bit better than FAS. Sequentially cut from the same log. About 200-400bdft per log.
If this price is reasonble, I can e-mail the name of a supplier.

I had a friend once that lived in Canada. He drove into the USA dragging a heavy and long tandem trailer carrying a car for a show. Funny, but when he drove back across the border, the floor of the trailer had a new bed made of 12/4 rough cut walnut. Customs never suspected a thing!

thats funny
A good start would be http://www.woodfinder.com which is a terrific resource of suppliers. I'm not sure about Canadian suppliers but I would be surprized if they did not have some resourses.
I'm very fortunate in living in Kentucky where we have vast resourses of hardwoods. Walnot is especially good here and I pay $2.90 per board foot for 100bdf lots. For the amount you are talking about I'm sure the price would be lower but I would hate to see the shipping.
