I’m not sure whether this should be in “Finishing” or “Classified,” but maybe more people will read this post here:
I recently posted a question regarding shellac drying in my generally cold workshop, and over the years I’ve certainly read many others’ posts regarding finishing in cold workspaces. I’ve been trying to come up with a temporary solution, and here’s my thought:
I’m hoping that I might find occasional space in someone’s Chicago or SW Michigan-area workshop or finishing room, for the winter months only, in which I can finish my pieces. My own workshop is a woodstove-heated, freestanding building in SW Michigan. It’s a fine space, but it’s difficult to get it consistently warm enough during the winter months to allow many finishes to dry/cure appropriately — or at all. (I’ve been forbidden to finish pieces in the house or apartment, and I can’t argue with that.) I’m planning to make changes, but in the meantime…
At the moment, I generally complete no more than 1-2 projects per month, pieces are never larger than what can fit in the back of a Ford Explorer (assembled or in pieces), and I only use hand-applied finishes (oil, shellac, wax, poly, etc.), so a spray room isn’t necessary. I’m not assuming that I will be offered free space, if any is available, and am open to discussing options for reimbursement, barter, etc. Also, I fully understand how important our workshops are to us, so I wouldn’t even consider stepping through the threshold unless there was a clear space available. I would bring in/take out all of my own supplies, wouldn’t touch your tools, definitely respect your rules, clean up after myself, etc.
If anyone has, or knows of, such a space I’d really appreciate hearing from you. Other ideas are also welcome. I can continue to make do, if necessary, but hope that I can find a temporary, better solution.

There is a DuPage (county) woodworking club with a nice website. Maybe someone there can help. Todd
Thanks, Todd -- I'll do a web search.

I also know that most big retirement centers have nice shops with experts in charge. If you called the expert at a couple, you might find one that would let you use some space, and closer to home. Todd
David,
Have you considered renting space in an auto-body shop?
Jeff
Great ideas... thanks, everyone.

Just a quick "thank you" to all who replied to my post, here and by e-mail, and an update: I found a finishing space in Chicago that should suit my needs just fine.
Thanks again,
