Hi everyone. First timer here. I’m pretty new to the woodworking scene and looking for some suggestions on a grain filler for purpleheart. It was recommended to me to use Deft Clear Wood Finish as a finish to best show off the purpleheart. What would be best if I used this topcoat? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to Knots, willy.
You shouldn't need a grain filler with PH. A couple coats of lacquer, cut back with some 220 grit, and the grain should be filled. I use 3 or 4 coats on my PH, which completely hides the grain if first sanded to 220, which is normally the finest sandpaper i use before a film finish. End grain, like on a turning, takes a couple more coats.
Deft is a good beginner finish, though a little soft as lacquers go. Other lacquers give more scuff resistance, but Deft is good for starting out and getting the feel of things, esp if you don't have spray equipment. Scuff sand lightly between coats--don't leave all the rubbing out to the end--and let the final coat sit for a couple days before final rub out, so that it hardens well. If you rub out too soon, it gets gummy.
SPLINTIE,
Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try. From your experience is a lacquer the best finish to use, to try and maintain the purple colour in the ph.Thanks again.
