Just had a nasty surprise. I was laying out some veneer plywood paneling for cutting and using masking tape to mark out the various pieces to be cut, only to discover that when I removed the tape tiny shreads of the veneer came with it. Fortunitely I allowed overage so can cut the bad strips off, but if it had happened on part of the wood that I needed, it would have ruined the wood. Given that I see people sometimes recommending that the side subject to tear-out be taped when cutting veneered plywood, this could be extremely destructive! Test an unwanted area first!!!

Use the blue painter's tape for that. It won't hurt soft veneers like that. It won't leave as much glue residue, either.
That's what I thought too, so that's what I used (blue 3M tape). Don't know if maybe the veneer wasn't manufactured properly. Maybe the angle of the veneer cut vs the grain, don't know what's causing it.
If the veneer was that loosely attached it's better you found it out early rather than late. Properly glued veneer will not come off with masking tape of any color.
