I’m taking delivery of the cabinets for my new home this week, and am looking for a durable finish, preferably wipe-on. Cabinets are a mission style, cherry in the kitchen, oak through the rest of the house. I have been playing around with Bartley’s gel system, but am thinking of going back to my old standby, Watco oil. I would really appreciate your comments.

Personally, I would not use an oil/varnish product such as Watco for kitchen cabinets. This type of finish offers very little immediate and virtually no long term protection. It would need to be continually renewed. Also, you would not be able to wash/wipe stains or grease without damaging the finish.
I would recommend a varnish product. The easiest would be a wiping varnish which you can make yourself. It is a 50/50 mixture of varnish and mineral spirits. You can go here and read the article titled Hand Applied Finish: http://members.home.net/jdkx2/links.htm
*Thanks for the help Howard. I'm definitely going to give that a try. I've been playing with th bartleys gel a little more, and am getting good results on my test pieces, but I want to be sure before I start on my cabinets.
