I am finishing some cherry doors and after mocking up a few samples I have tentatively settled on the following schedule:
-hand sand 180 grit
-one coat amber shellac
-hand sand 220 grit
-one or two coats General Finishes Pro Series Acrylic (WB) gloss
-hand sand 320 grit
-one coat GF Pro Series Acrylic semi-gloss
For the test samples I used Bulls Eye Amber shellac and did my best to pour off the top of the can and leave the wax in the bottom. Is this sufficient to avoid adhesion problems or should I get some de-waxed shellac? If so, which of the various darker shades do people like for darkening cherry a bit? These will be in the basement and thus get essentially no sunlight – thus my desire to darken them a bit.
BTW, this is my first experience with an HVLP gun and, so far, it has been fantastic. I got a Walcom SLIM from Homestead and setting it up was easier than I expected.
Advice appreciated.
Thanks, Chris

I would get dewaxed shellac. No reason to put so much work in making and finishing an object with a "maybe" I removed enough wax hanging over.
Garnet shellac is nice on cherry. A bit darker, but a bit more red than the orange of amber shellac--which after all used to be named orange.
