One of the guys in my woodwork club has been using/spraying hydrocote water based for many years. Only recently, he has taken the advice of a pro refinisher. He now stains the walnut with ORANGE stain before applying the water based finish. That’s right…orange.
I have seen examples that he brought to the club meeting. Wow, the orange stain treatment makes the walnut even nicer than petroleum based finishes.

Lots of guys have been using yellow first and adding a little red to bring up the orange effect slowly. This is a technique mentioned here on knots at least once before. I have tried it and I think it looks really nice on the eastern walnut that I use.
