I am using my standard oil/varnish formula (1/3 linseed oil, 1/3 mineral spirits and 1/3 varnish) on a large hard maple bed. I would like to put a finish coat of gloss water based poly over it. Is there a minimum amount of time I should let the oil/varnish finish cure and do I need to sand it at all first?
thanks!

I do this all the time with Watco. I usually let it dry for 72 hours (3 days) or until I can't smell it anymore. then coat with water based poly.

Are you sure I don't need to seal it first with a coat of de-waxed shellac??
depends..enduro a waterbase product I use says its ok as long as they o/b doesnt have silicon in it. I definately make sure it is good and dry before top coating it. depending of the product I waited as much as 4 days to finish.
Take a piece or two of scrap and apply the o/b and use it as a test piece before finishing your project.

okay, thanks!!!!
As long as the oil/varnish is fully dry, it can be overcoated with a waterborne varnish.Howie.........
